Kitty Goes To Washington

Title: Kitty Goes To Washington
Author: Carrie Vaughn
Book in the Series: Book 2 in the Kitty Norville series
Page Number: 76
Scale Of Realistic Detail: 3. Not too much detail to go on but the lead up is realistic enough. It gets a three because the one detail we do get is one of the parties involved purrs after sex.
Is Anyone Involved A Virgin?: No
Is Anyone Involved A Magical Creature?: One werewolf, one werepanther
Is It Consensual: Very
Is It A Plot Device: No. The male character in the twosome isn’t even plot related. He’s more of a sexy tangent.
Kinks Involved: Werewolves, were panthers?
Bangs Per Book: 2 confirmed more implied
Did You Feel Dirty For Reading This?: No. It feels like it wants me to. Unlike in the first book there is nothing gained from the insertion of sexy content into the story. It really just seems, dare I say, shoved in there for titillation. The book doesn’t rely on this to engage readers though and actually puts forward a strong plot even if various parts do seem to be picked up and dropped rather quickly.

Kitty And The Midnight Hour

Title: Kitty And The Midnight Hour
Author: Carrie Vaughn
Book in the Series: Book One of the Kitty Norville Series
Page Number: 28
Scale Of Realistic Detail: 1? I honestly don’t know how to rate this one. For the first time I’ve found a book where the only sex is between two werewolves while they’re in wolf form. It’s only a sentence really so not much to go on but it’s definitely doggystyle.
Is Anyone Involved A Virgin?: No.
Is Anyone Involved A Magical Creature?: Both are werewolves.
Is It Consensual: Yes. Warning though there is rape later on in the book.
Is It A Plot Device: No. Character building once again and I guess world building as well. In these books werewolves are described as very touchy feely and the book goes out of it’s way to normalize how sex is linked to pack dynamics.
Kinks Involved: They’re fucking wolves… wolves fucking… Furries?
Bangs Per Book: 1. There is another instance that could count but it’s not described in the moment just confirmed later on also I don’t like counting non-consensual stuff even though it’s my job.
Did You Feel Dirty For Reading This?: No, I feel like I should though. The book doesn’t have much sex in it but it’s presented as being sexy, usually shelved in “Paranormal Romance” and every recommendation I’ve gotten for it has been about it’s supposed sexiness. The only really hot and heavy scene (pg 179 for you pervs) doesn’t lead to actual banging and actually throws a bucket of cold water on your psyche immediately afterward by describing a previous rape and being turned into a werewolf on the same night (seems like lady werewolves can never catch a break in these books, out of three series there’s only been one consensual lady werewolf who doesn’t have a history of sexual violence). This is an intro to a series that could go either way, it toes the line with being “sexy” but doesn’t jump head first into porn. I’m actually looking forward to reading the next book.

Dog Days

Title: Dog Days
Author: John Levitt
Book in the Series: Book 1 in the Dog Days Series
Page Number: pg 161
Scale Of Realistic Detail: 3. Description of the foreplay and situation is very realistic except for the general setup of “hey I just saved your semi-magical dog from dying let’s bang so I can regain some magical energy”. The reason why this rates a 3 instead of something higher is that for the first time in a book with first person narrative the main character seems to somehow become aware of the reader for long enough to explain that he’s not going to give the reader details about the sex. Literally, “A full description of the next hour or so would be very much like the sex itself- fascinating if you’re the one taking part, but repetitive and monotonous if you just have to sit and listen.”
Is Anyone Involved A Virgin?: No
Is Anyone Involved A Magical Creature?: No
Is It Consensual: Yes. Although a later instance of masturbation in the book is not since a character is possessed when it happens.
Is It A Plot Device: Nope, more of a awkward dropped subplot where it looks like it’s leading toward building a relationship with other characters but nothing goes anywhere, much like how this author writes sex scenes.
Kinks Involved: Masturbation, awkward descriptions of vanilla sex
Bangs Per Book: 1.5
Did You Feel Dirty For Reading This?: No, it’s really just another simple by the numbers urban fantasy novel. Some of the ideas are cool but the main character seems to be suffering from a severe bout of wanna be Harry Dresden-itis. The awkward sex scene thrown randomly into the middle of the book was a little off putting. If anything the only things that made me feel gross about this book were some low-key homophobia regarding some of the characters and how they’re written and the extremely cringe-worthy possession masturbation which thankfully only lasts two sentences. The sex in this book was extremely unnecessary and I’m really hoping that it doesn’t get worse in future books in the series if I ever feel compelled to read them.
