Resume With Monsters

Title: Resume With Monsters
Author: William Browning Spencer
Book in the Series: Solo Book
Page Number: 247
Scale Of Realistic Detail: 4, I would give this a 5 if the main character wasn’t time displaced and trapped in the back of his own consciousness. All descriptions of sex in this book are sad and horribly relatable. Probably my favorite one in any book would be page 256 “Phillip watched their lovemaking which took place in the country of fatigue amid the small, tiny betrayals of living together and the slow, crafted affection of their daily intertwining.” Ouch, just ouch.
Is Anyone Involved A Virgin?: No
Is Anyone Involved A Magical Creature?: No
Is It Consensual: Yes
Is It A Plot Device: No. It reinforces some of the themes of the mundane being toxic and consuming in the book but nothing that I would consider essential. I do think it helps explore the main character’s psyche a little more which is always needed when you have a purposefully unlikeable narrator.
Kinks Involved: Nothing really unless you’re into literary dirty talk.
Bangs Per Book: 4
Did You Feel Dirty For Reading This?: Not at all even though parts of it should make me feel a little weird. Honestly this is one of my favorite unexpected bookstore finds. It’s a perfect mix of Lovecraft and Office Space with a decent amount of questioning into how much of the narrative is inside the main character’s head. Some of the sexuality in the book can be a little problematic because the protagonist has a very skewed world view and it makes for uneasy reading at times. I will argue that this is part of why I love this book. It never tries to portray him as a hero or glamorous. He’s a middle aged maybe insane man with obsessive behaviors which may or may not be influenced by the elder gods trying to jump into this time/reality through office politics and procedure. If he wasn’t heavily flawed the story would not work and his attitudes towards sex and the way he frames it give us a better grip on who he is and why people react to him the way they do (unexplainable eldritch horrors or no).
